To be visible on the platform everybody recommends, you have to produce. Posts, opinions, photographs of things you made, an answer in every thread. It is not a conspiracy and it is not unfair, it is simply what the model measures, and the people who do well at it are the people who enjoy being read. I do not. I have plenty to say and no wish to say it in front of two thousand strangers as a qualification for being spoken to.
Twenty eight, Brooklyn, switch, four years in. One arrangement of eight months that came out of a private conversation rather than anything I posted.
So this is my compromise: one long piece of writing, once, on a board where nobody keeps score of how often I contribute. It took me longer than I expected and I am not going to do it monthly.
What I want is ongoing and either direction, slightly weighted towards being led. Structure, a fixed rhythm, expectations that apply on ordinary days rather than special ones.
Not looking for anybody who will tell me I would do better if I posted more, because I know and I am not going to. Not looking for a person who needs an audience for any of this. And not looking to be judged on how visible I am, given that visibility and being worth knowing turned out to be entirely separate qualities.
